1. Enable Developer Options (Most People Skip This)
Go to Settings → About Device → Build Number. Tap Build Number 7 times until you see “You are now a developer.”
Now go back to Settings and you'll see a new Developer Options menu. Everything important is in here.
2. Reduce Animation Scale (Biggest Immediate Impact)
Inside Developer Options, find these three settings:
- Window animation scale → set to 0.5x or off
- Transition animation scale → set to 0.5x or off
- Animator duration scale → set to 0.5x or off
This is the single biggest visible improvement. The unit will feel snappy immediately after this change.
3. Set Background Process Limit
Still in Developer Options, find Background Process Limit and set it to 3 or 4 processes maximum.
Most head units ship with no limit set, so every app you've ever opened is sitting in RAM eating resources. Capping it forces Android to actually manage memory.

If your unit runs Android 12 or newer, look for Allow background blurs in Developer Options and turn it off. Background blur effects are GPU-intensive and completely unnecessary on a car display.
5. Clear the Launcher Cache
Go to Settings → Apps → [your launcher] (usually Agama, Carplay Launcher, or whatever ships with your unit) → Storage → Clear Cache.
Do this monthly. The launcher cache bloats over time and causes the exact “takes 3 seconds to open any app” symptom. If you're updating your launcher, it's also a good time to explore custom themes for your Android head unit.

Android head units ship with desktop Android defaults — not optimized for the hardware inside them. Every setting above is about undoing those defaults.
