How to Update Firmware on Your Android Head Unit

Before You Update — What to Check

Skipping prep is how people end up with a bricked unit. Take five minutes here and save yourself hours of recovery later.

• 1Identify your exact model. Check the sticker on the back or side of the unit, or go to Settings → About Device. The model number matters — firmware is model-specific. Installing the wrong one is the fastest way to brick a unit.
• 2Check your current firmware version. Go to Settings → About Device → Build Number. Write it down. You'll need this to verify the update worked — and to roll back if needed.
• 3Download only from the official manufacturer site. Never use firmware files from random forums, Facebook groups, or third-party download sites. Unofficial files can contain outdated versions, wrong regional builds, or malware.
• 4Back up what you care about. Firmware updates can wipe saved Bluetooth pairings, launcher configs, and app settings. Write down your setup — especially any custom launcher layouts or EQ settings — before you proceed.
• 5Prepare a FAT32-formatted USB drive (8GB+). Most head units won't read drives formatted as exFAT or NTFS. Format to FAT32 on your computer before copying any files.

Method 1 — USB Firmware Update

Most common · Works on all units · Recommended for major updates

1. 1Download the firmware zip file for your exact model from the manufacturer's official site. The filename usually includes your model number — double-check it.
2. 2Copy the zip to the root of your FAT32 USB drive. Do not extract or unzip the file. The update tool on the head unit reads the zip directly. Unzipping it will cause a “file not recognized” error.
3. 3Insert the USB drive into your head unit. Use the USB port on the unit itself — not an extension cable — to avoid read errors.
4. 4Open Settings → About Device → System Update (some brands use a standalone “Update” app on the home screen — varies by manufacturer). Select the firmware file from the USB when prompted.
5. 5Confirm and start the update. The unit will begin flashing immediately after confirmation.
6. 6Do NOT turn off the car or remove the USB while updating. This is the #1 cause of bricked units. A mid-flash power loss corrupts the firmware partition. Keep the ignition on and hands off the USB until it's fully done.
7. 7Wait for 1–3 reboots. The unit will restart itself during the process. This is normal. Do not touch anything — wait until it fully boots back to the home screen.
8. 8Verify the update. Go back to Settings → About Device → Build Number and confirm it shows the new firmware version.

Method 2 — OTA (Over-the-Air) Update

Easiest when available · Requires active WiFi · Usually incremental only

OTA updates are the easiest option — but not every unit supports them, and manufacturers often drop OTA support for older models. If your unit has a stable WiFi connection, check here first.

• 1Connect your head unit to WiFi (Settings → Network & Internet → WiFi). OTA requires a stable connection throughout the entire process.
• 2Go to Settings → About Device → Check for Updates. If an update is available, you'll see a download prompt.
• 3Download and install. Same rules apply — don't turn off the car or kill the WiFi connection mid-update.
• 4OTA updates are typically smaller incremental patches. Major firmware version jumps (e.g. Android 9 → Android 10) almost always require the USB method.

Troubleshooting — What to Do If the Update Fails

Pro Tips

• Join your brand's official Facebook group or forum. Manufacturers post firmware release notes and known issues there before updates go live. You'll know if a release is buggy before you install it.
• Never update right before a long trip. Give yourself at least a day to troubleshoot if something goes sideways. You don't want to be debugging a boot loop in a parking lot an hour before a road trip.
• If it ain't broke, consider leaving it alone. A firmware update isn't always necessary. If your unit is stable and everything works, check the release notes before updating — some updates introduce new bugs while fixing others.
• Document your launcher and settings before every update. Firmware can wipe custom launcher configs.
