Android Head Unit Not Turning On? Here's How to Fix It

Fix 1: Check the Fuse (Most Common Cause)

Head units blow fuses when there's a voltage spike or wiring short — and a blown fuse is by far the most common reason a unit won't power on at all.

Where to look: Check two places — the main fuse box under the dash, and the inline fuse on the head unit's red ACC wire (usually within a few inches of the battery connection).

• Tools needed: test light or multimeter
• Signs of a blown fuse: fuse element is visibly broken, no continuity reading
• Fix: replace with same amperage fuse (typically 10A–15A)

Fix 2: Check Power and Ground Wires

The two most common wiring failures are a loose ground (black wire) and a disconnected constant power wire (yellow wire).

• Yellow wire: Constant 12V — keeps memory alive. If this is loose, the unit loses its settings every time power is cut.
• Red wire: ACC 12V — triggers the unit to turn on with ignition. If this is missing, the unit won't power on at all.
• Black wire: Ground — if this is loose, nothing works. A bad ground is the single most-missed wiring fault.

Step-by-step: Pull the unit slightly out from the dash (you don't need to remove it fully). Check the wiring harness connectors at the back — reseat any that feel loose or look corroded.

Fix 3: Try a Hard Reset

Most Android head units have a recessed reset button — a pinhole usually located on the face or side of the unit. A hard reset clears a corrupted boot state without erasing your settings.

• Check with a multimeter at the battery: should read 12.6V+ at rest
• With engine running: should read 13.5–14.4V (your alternator charging)
• If voltage is low at rest: suspect a weak or failing battery
• If voltage is low while running: suspect a failing alternator

If voltage is the culprit, this is a car issue, not a head unit issue. Fix the battery or alternator first, then retest the unit.
