How to Add a Backup Camera to Your Android Head Unit (Full Setup Guide)

A backup camera is the single most popular add-on for Android head unit owners — and for good reason. It turns a blind spot into a clear view and makes parking or reversing in tight spaces dramatically safer. The problem is that most installs stall at the same point: the reverse trigger wire. Get that one step right and the rest is straightforward. This guide walks you through every step, from choosing the right camera to the final settings tweak.

What You'll Need

  • Backup camera — AHD (1080p, preferred) or CVBS/RCA (analog, universal)
  • RCA video cable — long enough to run from the camera to the head unit (typically 15–20ft for most cars)
  • Reverse trigger wire tap — T-tap connector or solder + heat shrink
  • 18–20AWG wire — to connect the trigger tap to the head unit
  • Optional: RCA signal tester or multimeter to verify connections before buttoning everything up

Step 1: Choose the Right Camera Type

Check your head unit specs first. Most modern units (2022 and newer) support both AHD and CVBS inputs. If yours does, go with AHD — the image quality difference in low light is significant.

Step 2: Run the RCA Video Cable

The RCA cable carries the video signal from the camera (at the rear of the car) to the head unit (at the dash). Take the time to run it cleanly — a sloppy cable route causes rattles and interference.

  1. 1Pop the trunk trim panels and run the RCA cable along the vehicle's passenger-side door sill toward the front of the car.
  2. 2Route under the center console — lift the carpet edge or use a plastic pry tool to tuck the cable cleanly out of sight.
  3. 3Feed through the firewall grommet or an existing cable pass-through into the cabin. Most vehicles have a rubber grommet you can push a wire through without drilling.
  4. 4Connect to the CVBS/AHD-IN port on the back of your head unit. It's usually labeled “CAM IN,” “AV IN,” or similar — check your unit's manual if you're unsure which RCA is for camera input.
  5. 5Tuck and secure the cable with zip ties every 12–18 inches along the route. A loose cable will rattle and can snag on moving parts under the carpet.

Step 3: Wire the Reverse Trigger

The reverse trigger wire tells your head unit to automatically switch to the camera feed when the car shifts into Reverse. This is the step that trips most people up — but it's simple once you know what to look for.

  1. 1Locate the reverse light wire at the tail light assembly. It's typically pink or purple — but always verify against your vehicle's wiring diagram before tapping.
  2. 2Tap into the wire using a T-tap connector or, for a more permanent connection, solder and seal with heat shrink tubing.
  3. 3Run an 18–20AWG wire from the tap up to the head unit's reverse trigger input — usually labeled “BAK,” “REV,” or “CAM” on the wiring harness.
  4. 4Verify with a multimeter before finalizing — confirm the wire reads +12V only when the car is shifted into Reverse, and 0V in all other gears.

⚠ Warning

Never connect the reverse trigger wire to a constant 12V source. If you do, the camera will stay on permanently whenever the ignition is on — and may drain your battery when the car is parked.

Step 4: Configure the Head Unit

With the camera wired and the trigger connected, the last step is telling the head unit how to handle the camera feed.

  1. 1Go to Settings → Camera or Settings → Video Input on your head unit.
  2. 2Set Camera Input to AHD or CVBS — match it to the camera type you installed.
  3. 3Enable “Auto-switch on reverse” or “Reverse trigger” so the camera feed switches on automatically when you shift into Reverse.
  4. 4Adjust the mirror/flip setting if the image appears reversed or upside down — most units have a toggle for horizontal and vertical flip.
