Software vs. Hardware
Start with the software fixes (Fixes 1–4) — they take 2 minutes and solve the majority of no-sound cases. Only move to hardware (Fixes 5–7) if the software checks all pass. A factory reset (Fix 8) is the nuclear option when nothing else works.
- If sound cut out suddenly after a settings change → start at Fix 1
- If sound never worked after a fresh install → check Fix 5 and Fix 7 first
- If sound works on some apps but not others → jump to Fix 4
Fix 1: Check the Audio Output Source
This is the most overlooked cause — and the easiest fix. Android head units have a setting that controls where audio is routed. If it's set to Bluetooth output but no Bluetooth device is connected, you'll get complete silence through the speakers.
- 1Go to Settings → Sound (or Audio Settings) on your head unit.
- 2Look for an option labeled Audio Output, Sound Output, or Output Device.
- 3Make sure it is set to Internal Speaker, Built-in Speaker, or Amplifier — NOT Bluetooth.
- 4If it was on Bluetooth: switch it to Internal/Amplifier and test immediately.
Note: The exact menu location varies by manufacturer. On some units it's inside the music player settings rather than system settings — check both.
Fix 2: Check All Three Volume Levels
There are actually three independent volume controls on an Android head unit — and any one of them being at zero will silence your audio completely. Many people only check one.
- 1. Unit volume (the main knob or slider): The physical volume knob or on-screen volume bar. Turn it up — obvious, but easy to miss after a reset.
- 2. Media volume (Android system volume): Press the volume buttons while a media app is open. The Android media stream has its own separate level. Drag it all the way up.
- 3. App volume (in-app settings): Some music and video apps (Spotify, YouTube, VLC) have their own internal volume slider. Open the app and check its settings or the on-screen player volume.
Also check that the unit isn't in mute mode — some units have a dedicated mute button or swipe gesture that's easy to trigger accidentally.
Fix 3: Check Fader and Balance Settings
If your fader is pushed all the way to the rear (or all the way to one side on balance), the front speakers or one channel will be completely silent. This is one of the most common “accidental” no-sound situations — it's easy to bump these sliders while adjusting other settings.
- 1Go to Settings → Sound → Fader/Balance (or look inside the EQ / Audio settings menu).
- 2Set Fader to center (0) — equal front and rear.
- 3Set Balance to center (0) — equal left and right.
- 4Test with a known audio source (e.g. YouTube with the volume up) immediately after.

Many Android head units ship with a dedicated DSP (Digital Signal Processor) app that runs independently of Android's volume controls. If this app has all channels zeroed out, you'll get complete silence even with everything else turned up. This is especially common on ATOTO, Eonon, and Joying units.
- 1Find the DSP or EQ app in the app drawer — it's usually labeled “DSP,” “Sound Tuning,” or “Audio Tuning.”
- 2Open it and check the main output levels — look for a Master Volume or Output Level slider that might be at 0.
- 3Check the crossover settings — if the crossover frequency is set too high or too low, it can roll off all audible frequencies to a particular speaker pair.
- 4The safest fix: look for a Reset to Default or Flat EQ option. Apply it and retest.
Tip
Some units let you enable/disable the DSP entirely. If the DSP is enabled but misconfigured, temporarily disabling it is a fast way to confirm it's the cause.
Fix 5: Check the Audio Harness Wiring
If you've just installed the unit — or recently removed it for any reason — a loose or disconnected audio wiring harness is the most common hardware cause of no sound. Even if the harness looks plugged in, it may not be fully seated.
- Speaker wires (typically colored pairs): Each speaker gets a positive and negative wire. A disconnected pair means silence from that speaker — if ALL are disconnected, complete silence.
- The main wiring harness connector: The large plug that connects the head unit to the factory harness adapter. If this is even slightly unseated, you can lose audio while other functions still work.
- Remote turn-on wire (blue): If you're running an external amplifier, the blue remote wire triggers the amp. If it's disconnected, the amp won't turn on — no sound.
Pull the unit slightly out from the dash and physically reseat every connector. You should hear or feel a click when each one seats properly.

Fix 6: Check for a Blown Audio Fuse
Some head units have a dedicated fuse for the audio circuit that is separate from the main power fuse. If this fuse blows (often due to a speaker wire short), you'll have a fully functional display and touchscreen — but complete silence.
- 1Check your head unit's manual for the fuse layout. On many units there are two fuses on the wiring harness — one for main power, one for audio.
- 2Look for a small inline fuse holder on the speaker output wires or inside the harness plug. Inspect the fuse element visually — a broken element means it's blown.
- 3Replace with the same amperage fuse (usually 5A–10A for the audio circuit). If it blows again immediately, you have a speaker wire short to investigate.
Fix 7: Factory Amp or Non-Amplified Output
If your car came with a factory-fitted amplifier (common on premium audio systems in many Ford, GM, Toyota, and European vehicles), the head unit's standard speaker-level outputs may not be compatible. The factory amp expects a low-level (RCA) signal or a specific signal format — not the speaker-level output that most aftermarket units provide.
- Check if your car has a factory amp: Look for an amplifier module (usually behind a seat, in the trunk, or under the dash) connected to the factory speaker wiring.
- Use a line output converter (LOC) or ISO adapter: A LOC converts the head unit's speaker-level output to a low-level RCA signal that the factory amp can accept. This is the most common fix for factory-amp cars.
- Check the amp's turn-on signal: Factory amps often require a specific 12V trigger signal. Some need the blue remote wire from the head unit; others use a dedicated signal from the factory radio. If the amp doesn't turn on, you'll get silence.

Fix 8: Software Bug — Clear Cache or Factory Reset
If all hardware checks pass and the wiring is solid, a software bug is the likely culprit. This is especially common after an app update or an interrupted firmware flash.
- 1Clear the media app cache: Go to Settings → Apps → [your music/media app] → Storage → Clear Cache. Retest.
- 2Reboot the unit: Hold the power button for 5–10 seconds for a hard reboot. Not just a screen-off — a full power cycle.
- 3Clear the system sound cache: Settings → Apps → Show System Apps → find “Media Server” or “AudioFX” → Clear Cache.
- 4Factory reset (last resort): Settings → System → Reset → Factory Reset. This wipes all settings and apps — you'll need to reconfigure everything, but it resolves most deep software issues.
Also check that the unit isn't android head unit running slowly — severe lag can sometimes manifest as audio dropouts or delayed sound that feels like no sound.
When It's a Hardware Failure
If you've worked through all 8 fixes and still have no sound, you're likely dealing with a hardware failure inside the unit itself — typically a blown internal amplifier chip. Signs that point to this:
- Sound worked fine, then suddenly went silent with no settings change
- Unit gets unusually hot (overheating can kill the amp chip)
- Crackling or distorted audio that slowly degraded before going silent
- Bluetooth audio works fine but wired speaker output is dead (rules out software)
At this point, a budget aftermarket head unit is often cheaper to replace than to repair. Before you do, also check if the head unit not turning on at all or touch screen issues are also present — if multiple systems are failing, it's almost certainly a hardware problem worth replacing rather than fixing.
